Dr. Gail Weingast is a name synonymous with excellence in radiology. For over two decades, she has dedicated her skills, knowledge, and leadership to William W. Backus Hospital in Norwich, Connecticut. As the Chief of Ultrasound and Breast Imaging, she has transformed the hospital’s radiology department into one of the nation’s most highly regarded centers for diagnostic imaging.

Dr. Weingast’s journey to becoming a leading radiologist was not a direct path. In 1969, she began her academic career at Tufts University’s Jackson College, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in Spanish. At the time, a medical career was not on the horizon, but her trajectory changed dramatically. Her determination and hard work propelled her to the Boston University School of Medicine, where she earned her medical degree in 1976, officially becoming Dr. Gail Weingast, MD.

Following medical school, Dr. Weingast embarked on an intensive post-graduate journey to refine her skills. From 1976 to 1984, she completed a series of residencies, internships, and fellowships that laid the groundwork for her success. She began with a pediatrics internship, followed by a residency in pediatrics, and later focused her specialization on radiology and ultrasound. These formative years were spent primarily at Colorado General Hospital in Denver, where she developed the expertise that would later define her career. In 1984, she completed her post-graduate radiology studies at St. Anthony’s Hospital, also in Denver.

Dr. Weingast’s career took her to multiple hospitals across Colorado and New York before she eventually found her home at Backus Hospital in Connecticut. Since her arrival over 20 years ago, Dr. Weingast has brought unmatched dedication to her role as Chief of Ultrasound and Breast Imaging. Under her leadership, Backus Hospital’s radiology department has thrived, earning recognition as one of the premier diagnostic imaging centers in the country.
